Bratwurst In The Oven

Cooking bratwurst in the oven is easy and makes a fast and delicious meal. These oven baked brats can be cooked together with peppers and onions 

We love serving these bratwurst with a variety of sides like Instant pot German potato salad, buttered noodles, and cabbage slaw.

Bratwurst is a German sausage made usually of pork but can also be made from veal or beef. They can be prepared in many different ways like on the grill or air fryer but today we are sharing how to cook bratwurst in the oven.  

What makes this recipe so good

  • Quick meal, under 30 minutes.  
  • Can be cooked together with your favorite vegetables. 
  • Don’t have to fire up the grill to make these brats plus you still get the nice char lines. 
  • Easy clean-up. Toss the parchment paper after they cook and your done. 

Ingredients needed

Bratwurst – There are many different types of bratwurst to choose from. We usually get the Johnsonville brats. 

How to cook bratwurst in the oven

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 
  2. Place olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper in a bowl and whisk. 
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place bratwurst on lined baking sheet. Place peppers and onions around brats on baking sheet. Drizzle oil mixture over brats and vegetables. 
  4. Cook for 10 minutes, flip the brats, toss the vegetables and cook another 10 minutes. 
  5. Serve warm with peppers and onions. Package of brats, onions, peppers, oil, vinegar

Recipe tips

  • Bratwurst needs to be cooked so that the internal temperature reaches at least 160 degrees F. 
  • If your brats are larger in size, you might need to add an additional 5-10 minutes of cook time. Use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach at least 160 degrees.  
  • Can you cook frozen bratwurst? Yes, you can place them in the oven frozen, just add an addition 10-15 minutes of cook time. 

How to store leftovers

Package any leftovers in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven, on the store or in the microwave until warmed. 

Beer brats in the oven

There are a couple different methods to make oven braised beer brats.  

Cook in beer: If you would like to make oven baked beer brats, add sliced onions and pepper in a baking dish. Pour in a bottle or two of your favorite beer. Place the brats on top of the peppers and onions. 

Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 30 minutes at 400 degrees F. 

Marinate in beer: The other method is pouring a beer in a shallow dish and place uncooked bratwurst in the beer to marinate for about 30-45 minutes. Remove from the dish and bake according to directions. 

What to serve with baked bratwurst

These sausage go well with many side dishes. Here are a few of our favorite:

  • Air fryer corn on the cob
  • Air fryer roasted potatoes
  • Air fryer baked potato
  • Roasted delicata squash
  • Baked sweet potato slices
  • Cucumber salad

You can also serve in a roll and top with things like:

  • Condiments: Mustard, Dijon Mustard, Ketchup, Horseradish
  • Vegetables: Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms, Jalapenos, Slaw, Sauerkraut, sliced apples
  • Cheese: Melted Provolone, American Cheese, Pepper Jack, Cheddar

Ingredients

  • 5-6 bratwurst
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 3 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
