McDonald’s breakfast burrito ingredients

  • Eggs – 8 eggs, whisked.
  • Half and half – Adding half and half to the egg mixture creates a fluffy scrambled egg. You can also achieve this using milk, heavy cream, or water.
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • Sausage – I’ve used breakfast pork sausage. Chorizo, turkey, or chicken sausage can also be used.
  • Green chilies – These are milder than other varieties of chilies, but you can leave them out completely if you don’t want any spicy heat. Chopped jalapeños are a delicious addition for an extra kick of heat.
  • Onion – While the onion could be left out, it does add great flavor. Dice the onion into small pieces to avoid large chunks in your burrito. You can use yellow onion, sweet onion, or red onion.
  • Tomatoes – Diced tomatoes add delicious flavor and color.
  • American cheese – This is a mild-flavored processed cheese that melts easily. Going to the deli counter for better-quality American cheese is worth the effort! Pepper Jack cheese is a good substitute.
  • Flour tortillas – A soft tortilla (8-inch taco-size) is perfect for this copycat recipe. A corn tortilla can be used to cater to gluten-free sensitivities, although it tends to be drier than flour tortillas. Spinach tortillas or whole wheat can also be used.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • Warm the tortilla in the microwave for 10 seconds or in a warm and clean skillet for easy rolling when assembling your McDonald’s sausage burrito. You can also wrap the assembled burrito in parchment paper and microwave it for 10-15 seconds.
  • Don’t overcook the eggs, as they can become dry and rubbery.
  • Cook the eggs and sausage the day before assembling the McDonalds breakfast burrito and store these ingredients in separate airtight containers in the fridge. This will reduce the recipe time even more!
  • Crumble the sausage well so that you’re left with tiny bits.
  • To reduce clean-up, cook the fluffy scrambled egg over the sausage and onions. Draining the excess grease from the cooked sausage is a good idea.
  • Flip your leftover stored burritos halfway through the reheating time to ensure an even reheating on both sides.

How to store leftovers

Store: This McDonald’s breakfast burrito should be wrapped in foil and placed in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat your leftover burrito in the microwave for 60-90 seconds on high.

Freeze: You can freeze this breakfast burrito for 2-3 months. Wrap it in foil and transfer it to an airtight container or Ziploc bag. Thaw the frozen burrito in the fridge overnight and reheat it in the oven wrapped in foil at 350 degrees for 7-8 minutes or in a microwave.

When reheating a frozen burrito, wrap it with a damp paper towel to prevent it from drying out.

What to serve with breakfast burritos
