I am sharing how to make a pineapple upside down cake shot that is a beautiful, layered vodka shot. It’s simple to make and has a wonderfully sweet taste. Layer vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and grenadine to make a drink that tastes just like the popular dessert it’s named after.

I am known to enjoy a fun cocktail on occasion, especially when it’s my turn to host bunco night. This pineapple upside down shot has quickly become a favorite of family and friends because of its beautiful presentation and most important, the taste.

After testing this recipe with different types of vodka like birthday cake vodka and plain vodka, I determined that the vanilla vodka really gives this shot a wonderful cake taste.

Pineapple upside down shot ingredients

  • Vanilla Vodka – Vanilla vodka adds a sweet, cake-like flavor. You can substitute with whipped cream vodka or cake vodka. You can even use regular vodka it just won’t be as sweet.
  • Pineapple juice – Use a filtered pineapple juice for this drink.
  • Grenadine – Adds that beautiful red color at the bottom and a touch of extra sweetness.
  • Ice – Enough ice is needed to fill up the cocktail shaker. This will help make the shot nice and cold.
  • Maraschino cherries – Optional garnish.

How to make pineapple upside down cake shots

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Pour vodka and pineapple juice in the shaker. Close and shake for 20-30 seconds. This helps to chill the drink.
  3. Pour into a tall shot glass and then slowly pour in grenadine.
  4. Optional add maraschino cherry either on top of the glass or drop it in the shot.

  • Be sure to slowly pour in the grenadine down the side of the glass so that you get the layered effect.
  • For a more tropical flavor, try substituting vanilla vodka with Malibu rum.
  • This can also be made into a cocktail drink. Use 3-4 ounces of vanilla vodka , 3-4 ounces of pineapple juice and then 1/2 ounce grenadine. Pour into a glass filled with ice to serve.

What if I don’t have cocktail shaker?

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, no problem! Try using a Mason jar instead. Simply add ice to the jar, along with the vodka and pineapple juice. Make sure you put the lid on tight and then shake.

Equipment

  • cocktail shaker

Ingredients 

  • ice for shaker
  • 1 oz vanilla vodka or plain vodka
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/4 oz grenadine
  • optional: maraschino cherries for garnish

Instructions 

  • Place ice in cocktail shaker.
  • Pour vodka and pineapple juice in the shaker over the ice.
  • Place lid on shaker and shake for 20-30 seconds.
  • Pour into shot glass. Slowly pour the grenadine down the side of the shot glass.
  • Optional, top with maraschino cherry.
