These air fryer cream cheese wontons, sometimes called Rangoons, are great served with a dipping sauce like duck sauce, sweet and sour, or hot mustard. They are a tasty blend of American and Chinese inspired food and an appetizer that is always a huge hit.

What makes these so good

  • Cook up quick and easy clean-up. Once these are formed, they cook up fast, under 10 minutes.
  • Crispy without all the extra oil. No need for a big pot of hot oil, these can be made in the air fryer with almost no oil. All you need is a light spray of the basket and a light spray on the wontons.
  • Perfect appetizer. Warm and crispy on the outside, and creamy on the inside. These bites are bursting with texture and flavor.

Ingredients needed

Wontons – Wonton wrappers can typically be found in the produce section of your grocery store. I found mine at Walmart.

Cream Cheese – Make sure it’s softened so it’s easier to mix. You can use full fat or low fat.

Green Onion – Dice them up small. Can be left out.

Garlic Powder – Adds a little extra flavor.

Sugar – Granulated sugar adds a nice balance.

Optional Siracha – If you like a little heat, add 1/2-1 teaspoon of siracha sauce to the mixture.

Olive Oil – Just a little olive oil is used to spray the basket and the top of the wontons to help them crisp.

Air Fryer – I used a 5.8 quart machine for this recipe. Any size can be used, it will just effect how many can be cooked at a time.

How to make

  1. Mix: Stir together cream cheese, onions, garlic powder and sugar in a bowl until combined.
  2. Fill: Place a wonton wrapper on a non-stick surface. Brush a little water around the edges and place a teaspoon of filling in the center of the wrapper.
  3. Fold: Bring opposite corners together and pinch. Bring together the other to corners together and pinch them all together.
  4. Cook: Mist air fryer basket with oil. Place in a single layer in basket. Spray the wontons with oil. Air fry for about 5-7 minutes.

How to fold

There are many different ways to fold wontons. In these pictures I am using the 4 corner method.

Four corners: Start by bringing opposite corners together and pinch. Bring the other two corners together and pinch them so all corners meet in the middle.

Folding a wonton.

Triangle: Fold opposite corners in half to form a triangle.

Pocket: Fold into a triangle, sealing the edges. Fold the two opposite corners in to form a “pocket” shape.

How to store

Store: These can be stored in a single layer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes or in the oven at 350 for 5 minutes.

Freeze: Let cooked wontons completely cool. Place on a lined baking sheet in the freezer for 30 minutes. Place the frozen wontons in a freezer safe container. Freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to eat, they can be cooked from frozen in air fryer at 370 for 3-4 minutes.

How to cook frozen wontons

If you buy frozen wontons from the store, they can be air fried straight from frozen. Place in air fryer basket and cook at 400 degrees F for 7-10 minutes.

Recipe tips

  • When you are assembling the wontons, place a damp paper towel over the wrappers to prevent them from drying out.
  • Try not to over wet the edges of the wontons. If they get too wet, it will become soggy and not crisp up.
  • Don’t overfill the wrappers so they don’t explode.
  • Each air fryer cooks a little differently. I recommend checking for doneness at 5 minutes. Add an extra 1-3 minutes depending on crispness preference.

Filling variations

This recipe uses a simple cream cheese mixture. You could also add:

  • Crab
  • Shrimp
  • Ground pork
  • Shredded cabbage and carrots
