Ingredients needed

  • Chicken – Leftover shredded chicken, rotisserie chicken, or slow cooker buffalo chicken are great options for this sandwich. Shredded turkey is also a good substitute.
  • Buffalo sauce – This is used to coat the chicken for a delicious buttery and spicy flavor. Feel free to use your favorite store-bought buffalo sauce or make your own by following my easy homemade buffalo sauce recipe here!
  • Buns – Brioche buns or hamburger buns are perfect. Gluten-free buns can be used to cater to dietary needs.
  • Toppings – Top each buffalo chicken sandwich with your choice of favorite toppings, such as ranch dressing or my Buffalo Ranch Dressing, Buffalo Sauce, blue cheese dressing, blue cheese crumbles, lettuce, napa cabbage, onions, pickles, crushed chips, or crushed crackers.

How to make a buffalo chicken sandwich

Step one: Heat up the cooked chicken in a pan on medium-low heat. Add the buffalo sauce and stir until coated well and warmed through.

Step two: Place the chicken on the bun and add your choice of toppings.

Recipe tips

  • You can crisp the buns in the oven for a few minutes under the broil setting for an extra crunchy texture.
  • If you like a saucy sandwich you can add extra after assembling.
  • The chicken filling with buffalo sauce can be assembled the night or the day before and heated just before assembling the sandwiches.
  • Easily double or triple this recipe when catering to a larger crowd. You could also make sliders with this buffalo chicken sandwich filling as a tasty party appetizer.
  • Brioche buns are my preferred choice for these saucy buffalo chicken sandwiches as they are sturdy buns that soak up liquids without falling apart.

How to store leftovers

Store: Store any leftover buffalo shredded chicken filling in an airtight container in the
refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it in a saucepan on the stove for 5-10 10 minutes.

I don’t recommend storing fully assembled buffalo chicken sandwiches, as the bun will become soggy. Leftover toppings, such as crispy salad ingredients, should be stored in separate containers in the fridge or used in other dishes.

Freeze: Store the buffalo shredded chicken in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw the frozen sandwich filling in the fridge overnight and reheat in a saucepan before assembling fresh buffalo chicken sandwiches.

  • 1/2 cup buffalo sauce
