If you have ever been to Wingstop, you probably know about their tasty seasoned French fries. This copycat Wingstop fries recipe is a great way to make your own without having to leave your house.

French fries on a plate with bowl of ketchup.

Have you tried Wingstop yet? It’s a great fast casual restaurant that specializes in chicken wings. They are known for their different spice flavors like this Louisiana rub, lemon pepper, and mango habanero.

The key to their delicious fries is the Wingstop fry seasoning. It’s made with a flavorful blend of spices with pinch of sugar which gives them an incredible smoky, salty, sweet taste.

In this recipe I’m sharing how to make Wingstop fries on the stove and in the air fryer. Deep frying them on the stove will give you that true restaurant style French fry but if you are looking to cut back on calories and oil, I recommend trying them in the air fryer.

    Ingredients Needed

Russet potatoes – These are my favorite potatoes to use for French fries. They are low in moisture and high in starch which helps to make them crispy.

Oil – Use olive oil if making in the air fryer or vegetable oil if deep frying.

Seasonings – The seasonings needed for the fries are garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, salt, pepper, sugar and brown sugar.

    Bowls of seasonings and potatoes.

    Wingstop Fry Seasoning Recipe

The great thing about making spice mixes at home is that you can adjust the seasoning to your taste. Here are the spices you will need for Wingstop fry seasoning:

    • Garlic powder
    • Onion powder
    • Chili powder
    • Paprika
    • Salt
    • Ground black pepper
    • Sugar
    • Brown sugar

How To Make Copycat Wingstop Fries

Depending on your preference, you can make these Wingstop fries on the stove or in the air fryer. Making them in the air fryer will save you a few calories because they are not deep fried.

    Air fryer

Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to cook these in two batches.

    1. Scrub and clean potatoes. Cut the potatoes into fries by cutting them 1/4 inch lengthwise and then cut into fries. Feel free to peel them if you don’t like the skin.
    2. Place them in a bowl with ice water. This helps remove some of the starch which helps to get them crispy when they cook. Let them soak for 30 minutes up to 2 hours.
    3. Remove from water and pat them dry.
    4. Place fries in a bowl and toss with olive oil, salt and pepper.
    5. Pour the fries into air fryer basket. Try spreading them out into a single layer to ensure they cook evenly.
    6. Cook at 390 degrees F for 10 minutes. Shake the basket and cook another 7-10 minutes. Be sure to keep checking on the fries. Each air fryer will cook a little different so you want to make sure they don’t burn.
    7. Mix the seasonings together in a bowl while fries are cooking.
    8. Carefully remove the French fries and immediately season with Wingstop seasoning.

    Stove

    1. Clean potatoes, cut into fries.
    2. Place fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes.
    3. Remove from water and pat dry with paper towels.
    4. Pour 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven. Heat oil to 325 degrees F.
    5. Place half of the cut potatoes into the pot and cook for 5 minutes. Remove and place on a paper towel lined plate. Add the remainder of the cut potatoes and cook 5 minute, remove.
    6. Place the cooked fries back in the hot oil and cook again for 2-3 minutes.
    7. Carefully remove and place on another paper towel lined plate.
    8. Toss fries in seasoning mix.
Potato cut into fries and bowl of seasoning.

    How To Serve Wingstop Fries

These fries are so flavorful and delicious by themselves but they are also great served with a dipping sauce. Here are a few of our favorite dipping sauces:

    • Boom Boom Sauce
    • Wingstop Ranch
    • Fry Sauce
    • Tartar Sauce

    Recipe Tips

    • I would recommend not skipping the soaking portion of the recipe. If you have time, let the potatoes soak up to 2 hours.
    • If you decide to air fry, try keeping fries in a single layer while cooking. This helps them to cook evenly. You might have to cook in 2-3 batches.
    • If you decide to deep fry your potatoes, make sure to use a good oil like vegetable oil, peanut oil, or canola oil.
    • You will want to have a thermometer appropriate for frying so that you can keep an eye on the temperature.

How To Store And Reheat Leftovers

Store: Have leftover fries? Let them completely cool and store them in a freezer bag in the refrigerator. Make sure to remove as much air from the bag as possible.

Reheat: You can reheat in the air fryer at 390 degrees F for 3-5 minutes. You can also reheat in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Yes you can prepare them and then place on a foil lined baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes. Then bump up the oven temperature to 425 and bake another 15-20 minutes.

I have an unhealthy obsession with Wing Stop fries and this was right on the money! So glad i can make them on my own in oven without having them fried. I didn’t have any paprika or onion powder, but used cayenne pepper and they were just as tasty. 10/10!!

I ordered Wingstop and asked for extra seasoning on the fries and they missed that part. I threw this together right quick, sub’s the chili powder with cayenne (didn’t have chili) and added a little bit more sugar. Felt like a little something was missing and just on a whim added a little less than 1/4 tsp of Hidden Valley Ranch buttermilk ranch seasoning. Man that really did it! The recipe as is is great so I’d suggest if you’re reading this…go ahead and try it. Not exactly sure how different it would be if I started from scratch with potatoes and all but as a seasoning on its own, this is really good!

I hated how none of the “reviews” had actually made the recipe 😭 BUT, I still made it stove top and it’s soooo good it tastes exactly like it. The only thing is that when you do it stovetop the recipe doesn’t say to add salt so definitely add salt to taste 10/10 very good.
