I’ve seen it called chocolate garbage cake, chocolate pudding dump cake, or just chocolate dump cake, but no matter what name you use, this recipe is all about simplicity. A no fuss chocolate dessert that comes together with little effort in about 30 minutes.

I have a sweet tooth, especially when it comes to chocolate. If a dessert has chocolate chips, I am usually the first one in line. This easy chocolate cake recipe has become one of my go to desserts when I’m craving something chocolatey but don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

This is the kind of cake you can throw together with ingredients you might already have in your kitchen. It’s warm and comforting and so good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Ingredients

It’s hard to believe you can make this chocolate dump cake with no eggs. You only need a few ingredients that you might already have on hand.

Box of cake mix, pudding mix, butter, chocolate chips, and milk.
  • Cake mix: Use your favorite chocolate cake mix to make this cake recipe. I’m using Devil’s Food for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • Chocolate pudding mix: You will need a small box of instant chocolate pudding mix. This helps to give the cake fudgy texture.
  • Milk: Milk give the cake moisture and helps to combine the ingredients. Use whatever milk you have on hand but whole milk will give you the richest flavor.
  • Butter: Melted unsalted butter adds richness to the cake.
  • Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips add an added layer of chocolate flavor.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • Use instant pudding mix, NOT the cook and serve.
  • Let the melted butter cool for a few minutes. Make sure to let the butter cool off a little before mixing it in with the milk. This will help prevent curdling.
  • You can serve this cake warm or at room temperature. I prefer this cake served warm but it can also be served at room temp.

Variations

Make this chocolate pudding dump cake your own with a few variations.

  • Chocolate chips: You can substitute with dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, mint chocolate chips, or peanut butter chips
  • Marshmallows: Try add a layer of mini marshmallows the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • Toffee bits: Sprinkle on a few toffee bits for an extra layer of sweetness.
  • Nuts: Add chopped pecans for some crunch.
  • Pudding mix: You can swap out the chocolate pudding mix with vanilla pudding mix or cheesecake pudding mix.

Storage instructions

Store any leftover cake covered at room temperature for 2 days. If you would like it warm, microwave a piece for 30 seconds, or cover and bake in the oven at 350 until warmed.

This cake can be frozen for up to 2 months.
