We love our coffee drinks like this chocolate coffee, but today we are sharing a simple and delicious recipe using whole coffee or espresso beans.

Why you will love these

  • Easy – This two ingredient recipe couldn’t be easier. They can also be prepared in about 10 minutes.
  • Cost – You can make a large batch of these chocolate coated espresso beans for a fraction of the cost of pre-made ones.
  • Energy boost – Espresso beans covered in chocolate give a nice little energy boost because of the caffeine in the espresso beans. The caffeine content will depend on what type of beans you use.

Espresso beans vs coffee beans

Espresso beans are essentially coffee beans that have been roasted longer, so dark roasted coffee beans. Since they have been roasted longer, they typically have less acidity. This treat can also be referred to as chocolate covered coffee beans.

Ingredients needed

Espresso beans – Any whole bean coffee will work. We are using a dark, French roast bean but if you prefer a more mild flavor, use a light or medium roast bean.

Chocolate – Use your favorite chocolate to make this sweet treat. You can learn more about easily melting chocolate. I like using semisweet chocolate or dark chocolate chips because I typically have them on hand but a chopped chocolate bar, almond bark, milk chocolate, and even white chocolate will work.

How to make chocolate covered espresso beans

Step one: Pour chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl or a double boiler.

Step two: Melt the chocolate being sure not to burn it. If microwaving, do it in 10-15 second intervals, stirring each time until melted.

Step three: Pour the espresso beans into the melted chocolate and stir until they are all coated. Using a fork, remove the beans and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. You can lay them out individually or in clusters of 2-3 beans.

How to store

Keep any leftovers in an airtight container either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last about one week.

You can also freeze these beans in a freezer safe bag or container for a month. Thaw in the refrigerator over night.
