Salty potato chips topped with sweet chocolate is the perfect combination! A few reasons we love this recipe:

  • Simple – All you need are three ingredients, two if you decide to leave out the shortening.
  • Versatile – These are fun to serve as a snack, holiday, party, or just because.

Ingredients needed

Bag of potato chips, bag of chocolate chips, and shortening.
  • Potato chips – Wavy potato chips work well for this recipe. If the chips are super thin, they might break when dipping them in chocolate.
  • Chocolate chips – You can use milk chocolate chips or semi-sweet chocolate chips. I like using Ghirardelli chocolate chips or Nestle chocolate chips.
  • Shortening – A little bit of shortening helps to smooth out the chocolate and helps to make it a little thinner and less clumpy. You can leave this out.

How to make chocolate covered potato chips

  • Step one: Melt – Place the chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. Make sure to stir in between each cook time.

  • Step two: Dip- Dip the potato chips into the melted chocolate.
  • Step three: Set – Place the dipped chip on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper.

Recipe tips

  • If you don’t want to use a microwave, you can melt chocolate chips with using a double boiler.
  • Don’t overcook the chocolate. Be careful not to burn the chocolate when microwaving.
  • You can make as many or few as you want. Just adjust the amount of chocolate chips you melt.
  • You can dip part of the chip into the chocolate if you prefer a little bit of the potato chip exposed.

Variations

Chips – Try using different chips like baked chips, kettle chips, or even something like a BBQ chip for extra fun flavor.

Chocolate – You can use dark chocolate, white chocolate, milk chocolate, or semi-sweet.

Toppings – While the chocolate is still wet on the chip, try adding colorful sprinkles, toffee bits, flaked coconut, chopped nuts, or a little flaked sea salt.

How to store

Store: Keep any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. They can also be kept in the refrigerator.

Freeze: These chips do not freeze well.
