Piece of pumpkin dump cake.

I love pumpkin season, it’s definitely my favorite time of year. Crisp air, colorful leaves, and of course, pumpkin desserts. This pumpkin dump cake is one of my favorite fall desserts. A layer of creamy pumpkin topped with a butter pecan cake and toffee bits.

Dump cakes are so easy to make, no complicated mixing, frosting, or pie crust making. Everything gets layered in a 9 x 13 baking dish and then is baked till perfection.

I like making this dump cake with a butter pecan cake mix like I use for this honey bun cake. It gives the cake such great flavor. If you can’t find the butter pecan cake, you can substitute with yellow or spice cake mix.

If you love pumpkin pie flavors but want something easier, this cake is a must try. A simple fall dessert perfect for get togethers, potlucks, Thanksgiving, and more.

You can make this pumpkin pie dump cake with simple ingredients. Make sure to use canned pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling.

Boxed cake mix, melted butter, toffee chips, evaporated milk, canned pumpkin, brown sugar, eggs, and pumpkin pie spice.
  • Butter pecan cake mix: I like using a butter pecan cake mix for this recipe because it has great fall flavor. You can substitute with yellow cake mix or spice cake mix.
  • Pumpkin puree: Make sure to use a can of pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling.
  • Brown sugar: Light brown sugar adds a little extra sweetness to the cake.
  • Evaporated milk: Make sure to use evaporated milk not sweetened condensed milk.
  • Vanilla: Adds a little sweetness and warmth to the pumpkin mixture.
  • Eggs: Three eggs help to bind the cake batter together.
  • Butter: Melted unsalted butter is poured over the cake mix to help it brown up.
  • Pumpkin pie spice: This helps to give the cake the cozy fall flavor. You can use premade or homemade pumpkin pie spice.

Heather Recipe Tips

  • Sprinkle the cake mix evenly. This will help everything bake up evenly.
  • Try and cover as much of the cake mix as you can with the melted butter. I like to take a spoon or small spatula to press the cake mix into the butter. Make sure to do this gently so that it doesn’t mix in with the pumpkin layer.
  • Check the cake around 30 minutes. If the top of the cake is starting to get golden brown, you can loosely cover with foil to prevent the top from burning.
  • Let it rest before serving. I recommend letting it set about 30 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

This cake is delicious on it’s own but I also like serving it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla or butter pecan ice cream.

Variations

  • Cake: Substitute the butter pecan cake mix with yellow cake mix, golden butter cake, or spice cake mix.
  • Nuts: For extra crunch, top the cake with chopped pecans.
