Craving cake but don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen? 3-2-1 cake in a mug is made with just 2 ingredients and can be prepared in minutes.

When I am craving a quick treat but don’t feel like baking, this mug cake using cake mix is my go-to. Once you have combined the cake mixes it takes just 1 minute to cook. Can’t get much faster than that!

Microwave mug cake would be a great dessert to have in a camper, dorm room, or if you don’t have an oven. All you need is the cake mix mixture, water, and a microwave.

This is also a fun recipe to get creative and experiment with different cake flavors, add-ins, and toppings.

What you will need

  • Cake mix – Choose your favorite flavor cake mix. The brand does not matter for this recipe.
  • Angel food cake mix – One box of angel food cake mix.
  • Water – You will need 2 tablespoons of water to add to the cake mixes.
  • Optional – Frosting, sprinkles, whipped cream, or Cool Whip for topping the mug cake.

How to make 3-2-1 cake in a mug

Step one: Make the base – Pour the cake mix and angel food cake mix in a gallon size zip top bag.

Step two: Zip the bag and shake to combine the mixes.

Step three: Make the mug cake – Place 3 tablespoons of cake mix into a coffee mug. Add in 2 tablespoons of water and stir together.

Step four: Microwave cake for 1 minute. If you like, add some frosting, whipped cream, or Cool Whip to the top of the cake and serve. You can serve in the mug or using a butter knife, gently push the cake out onto a plate.

Tips for success

  • Don’t over mix the cake mix and water.
  • Be sure to use a large enough microwave safe-mug.
  • Microwaves can vary so you might need adjust the cooking time.


  • Mix: You can use any of your favorite cake mix flavors like vanilla cake mix, yellow cake mix, strawberry cake mix, spice cake mix, red velvet cake mix, funfetti cake mix, devil’s food cake mix and more.
  • Add-ins: Try mixing in a sprinkles, marshmallows, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, shredded coconut, or M&M’s.
  • Toppings: Frosting, icing, whipped cream, fresh berries, Cool Whip, ice cream, hot fudge, butterscotch sauce, pudding buttercream frosting, and more.


Can you make this 3-2-1 microwave mug cake bigger?

The ingredients in the recipe makes a small cake. If you are using a large mug, you can add 1 extra tablespoon of cake mix and an extra 1/2 tablespoon of water for a slightly larger cake.

Can you use any cake mix?

Yes, feel free to use your favorite dry cake mix flavor for this recipe.

Can you make a mug cake in a ramekin?

Yes, you can add the ingredients to a microwave safe ramekin instead of a coffee mug.

How to store leftover cake mix?

Keep the cake mix mixture in a large zip top bag or an airtight container. It will stay good at room temperature for about 6 months. Don’t forget to label your bag or container with the recipe.

Make a delicious microwave mug cake in 1 minutes with 2 ingredients. This is a seriously easy magic mug cake that is perfect for a single serve cake. This might be one of the easiest desserts ever!

Mug Cake Mix

  • 1 box cake mix
  • 1 box angel food cake mix

Mug Cake

  • 3 tablespoons mug cake mix
  • 2 tablespoons water


  • Place cake mix and angel food cake mix in a gallon size zip top bag or an airtight container with a lid. Shake to combine the cake mixes.
  • To make the mug cake, place 3 tablespoons of the mug cake mix and 2 tablespoons of water in a microwave safe coffee mug.
  • Microwave for 1 minute. Optional, add frosting or whipped cream to the top of the cake and serve.
