My slow cooker has been in overdrive since school started. It really helps me get a delicious dinner on the table without much fuss. Lately, this slow cooker French onion chicken has been a favorite.
This chicken recipe is made with simple ingredients but is full of rich flavors. The chicken cooks low and slow until its tender and juicy, soaking up all of the flavors from the seasonings, onion, and broth, yum!
We like to top the chicken off with some cheese, like you would with French onion soup, and serve it with sides like mashed potatoes, rice, or pasta. It’s also great shredded and served on a bun to make a French dip sandwich.

- Onion – One onion sliced thin. You can use yellow onion, white onion, Vidalia onion, or even red onion.
- Lipton Onion Soup Mix – Onion soup mix adds great flavor to this recipe.
- Au Jus mix – This adds rich, beefy taste that helps to create that French onion soup flavor.
- Condensed French onion soup – One can of condensed French onion soup is the base for this recipe.

Heather’s recipe tips
- Slice the onions thin. This helps them to cook and caramelize.
- Don’t forget the butter. Adds great flavor and helps the onions cook.
- Add cheese at the end. If you want to add cheese, do it at after the chicken has finished cooking.
Substitutions and variations
Onion soup mix alternative: If you don’t have a pack of onion soup mix, you can substitute with a teaspoon of beef bouillon, a tablespoon of onion powder, and a half teaspoon of garlic powder.
Make it creamy: You can make the gravy creamy by stirring in a little heavy cream or sour cream the last few minutes of cooking time. I have even made this adding in a can of cream of chicken soup.
Serving suggestions
Crock pot French onion chicken can be served shredded or as a whole chicken breast. It’s wonderful on its own but also delicious served with some sides. Some of my favorite sides to serve it with include:
- Mashed potatoes: I love serving this chicken shredded on top of mashed potatoes.
- Rice: White or brown rice make a great side dish.
- Egg noodles: Buttery egg noodles are a wonderful compliment to this chicken.
- Crusty bread: Serve with a side of bread or pile the chicken on a toasted bun to make a sandwich.
It’s also great shredded up and served in a taco shell, wrap, or on a bun for a sandwich.

Storage
Store: Store any leftover crockpot French onion chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Freeze: Place the chicken and sauce in a freeze safe bag. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Reheat: Reheat on the stove, in the oven, or back in the crockpot.
