Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 3-4 chicken breasts
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 (1 ounce) packet au jus mix
  • 1 (1 ounce) packet Lipton onion soup mix
  • 1 can condensed French onion soup
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, sliced

Optional ingredients

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese or provolone cheese
  • ½ cup fried onions

Instructions

  • Spread the sliced onions on the bottom of the slow cooker. Place the chicken breasts on top of the onions.
  • Sprinkle the au jus and the onion soup mix over the chicken.
  • Pour the French onion soup over the chicken and seasonings.
  • Place sliced butter on top of the chicken.
  • Cover with the lid and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  • If adding cheese, place a slice of cheese on top of each chicken breast. Cover the slow cooker until the cheese melts. Optional top with crispy fried onions.

Notes

  • Slice the onions thin. This helps them to cook and caramelize.
  • Don't forget the butter. Adds great flavor and helps the onions cook.
  • Add cheese at the end. If you want to add cheese, do it at after the chicken has finished cooking.
