Be the star of your tailgate with this classic, all purpose tailgate chili.
My whole family LOVES football season and that is an understatement. My mom knows every player position and my 6 year old son doesn’t miss a game. We always try to attend at least one or two of our college games each season. A few weeks ago when we were at our first game my husband declared that we are going to bring our tailgate to the next level…Tailgreatness!
To achieve tailgreatness we need great food. For me, football food is the best part of the whole game experience. I would be happy just cheering on the team from our tailgate spot so I could stay and eat. One of my favorite ground beef chili recipes to bring to our tailgate or even just watching the game at home is my mom’s tailgate chili. It is a great classic chili recipe that can be used in so many different ways. This chili is always a huge hit with the fans!
As part of preparing for our tailgate, my husband and I have to think ahead about what all of the yummy, cheesy, spicy food does to our bodies. Unfortunately, as we have gotten older, our heartburn is something that creeps up on us. We stay prepared by taking one Nexium® 24HR tablet a day, several days before game day. It allows us to enjoy all of the tailgating spread without the fear of being sidelined by heartburn.
Enough about me getting old, let’s make some chili! Start by adding diced celery, onion and garlic to a large pot and saute until tender.
Add in ground beef and cook until browned. Make sure to drain off any excess liquid after the beef has cooked to get rid of that extra fat. Mix in water, sauce, tomato paste, diced tomatoes and chili powder.
Bring the chili to a boil and then cook for one hour. If you are bringing this to a tailgate I would recommend putting the chili in a slow cooker to stay warm.
I love how versatile this chili is for making many different meals. I think my favorite is using it for nachos and my husband loves putting it on top of french fries. Having different options for your tailgating guests will keep them coming back for more.
